Exports of food technology to Iran firm on a high level. The Iranian food technology market is the most important one for major international players with interest in the Middle East region. According to VDMA-The German Engineering Association, Iranian imports of food processing and packaging equipment, in 2011, have increased to 361.8 million US-Dollars, compared to 360.8 million US-Dollars in 2010 and 293.1 million US-Dollars in 2009. Germany, Italy, China, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands have been the main supplier countries.
According to the Iranian Food Industry Organizations Assembly a total of 12,198 units are engaged in Iran’s food industry. This represents 12% of the units active in the entire industrial sector. More than 328,000 persons are employed in this sector. This represents 16.1% of the workforce in Iranian industry. Total investment in the food sector amounts to US$ 7.7 billion, which is approximately 18% of total investment in the industrial sector. Source: Asia & Middle East Food Trade, Volume 28, Dec. 2011
Looking at developments in Iran’s food industry, rising disposable incomes should benefit the consumption of beef at the expense of poultry, as mainly higher-income consumers trade up to the more expensive meat. However, a reliance on imports for domestic beef consumption will keep beef prices too high for many Iranians. Therefore, poultry demand is expected to continue to grow strongly. The government has been active in the local rice market, exercising control over production and imports to control prices.
