Nigeria holds major business opportunities for international suppliers
The EUROPEAN UNION officially supports agrofood & plastprintpack Nigeria 2015. This becomes evident from a letter of 28 October 2014 of Michel ARRION, Head of Delegation and Ambassador of the EUROPEAN UNION – Delegation to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to the Economic Community of West Africa States.
“…, the European Union works closely with the Nigerian authorities to improve Nigeria’s business environment and competitiveness, to support its industrial revolution agenda and to ensure quality of products.
The food and beverage sector represents a very large segment of the Nigerian manufacturing industry. The sector generates over 1.5m jobs in the country and thus employs 5% of the Nigerian workforce. Moreover, with a market of over 160 million consumers, and a constantly growing population, Nigeria has an increasing demand for packaged and ready-made food products …
Against this background, European suppliers can play an important role in providing the Nigerian food manufacturing and agro-business industry with machinery, equipment and technological know-how meeting a high degree of food safety and compliance with international hygienic standards.
The Delegation of the European Union to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and ECOWAS therefore welcomes the initiative of fairtrade Messe to organize the 1st International Trade Fairs “agrofood & plastprintpack Nigeria 2015” to be held at the Landmark Centre in Lagos on 28-30 April 2015.
We support this important event and wish that during the years to come it will develop into a leading platform for technological exchange in the areas of agrofood, food processing and packaging.”
Nigeria stands for an abundance of natural resources such as oil, gas and agricultural land and an attractive and fast growing consumer market. The country ranks 13 on the list of the largest oil producing countries, well ahead of Norway, Algeria, Angola, Kazakhstan and Qatar.
With 179 million inhabitants Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the 7th most populous country in the world. Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa, having just overtaken South Africa in this respect. No wonder that it is listed among the ‘next 11’ economies and expected to become one of the world‘s top 20 economies by 2050.
Significantly increasing prosperity together with a rapidly growing population encourage investments into shopping malls, in agriculture and the food industry. Figures of VDMA-The German Engineering Association confirm very high Nigerian agro & food tec imports. Figures of the WTO confirm the same for finished food products:
- Nigerian imports of food processing and packaging technology, between 2010 and 2013, have increased from 198 million Euro to 331 million Euro.
- In the same period imports of agricultural machinery and equipment went up from 46 million Euro to 63 million Euro.
- Imports of finished food products rose from 4.5 billion US dollar in 2010 to 5.7 billion US dollar in 2013.
It is against this backdrop that fairtrade launch agrofood Nigeria. The 1st International Trade Show on Agriculture, Food, Beverage & Packaging Technology and Food, Beverages & Hospitality is scheduled for 28 to 30 April 2015 at the brand-new Landmark Convention Centre in Lagos.
And already more than six months before its opening, the event
- enjoys the official support of the EUROPEAN UNION,
- France with adepta is about setting up an official French pavilion with a minimum of eight French companies and
- leading suppliers such as Alis-Casa Rinaldi, BCE Food Service, Bosch, Döhler, GEA, Goma, Kautex, Konica Minolta, Pakona, Symrise, Windmöller & Hölscher, … have already booked their stands.
To create valuable synergies for exhibitors and visitors alike, agrofood Nigeria is held in conjunction with plastprintpack Nigeria, the 1st International Trade Show on Plastics, Composites, Chemistry and Printing & Packaging Solutions and Material.
“The idea to launch a professional platform especially for the Nigerian business community was brought up by the exhibitors and the organizers of national pavilions at our agrofood & plastprintpack West Africa 2013 in Accra last December”, says Martin März, fairtrade’s CEO. “We then presented the project at a meeting with the economic counsellors of Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden in Lagos this February and received an all-around positive feed-back. Therefore we are excited to create this new major platform for our long-term customers.”
As Austria is already committed to participate with a group of companies, the Commercial Counsellor with the Austrian Embassy in Lagos, Ms Nella Hengstler, points out: “Nigeria will be the next global manufacturing hub. The sheer size of Nigeria’s market combined with its large and young work force will attract massive investments in the manufacturing industry. Machines and production materials will continue to be imported, though. I therefore welcome and support agrofood & plastprintpack Nigeria 2015 as it is important for European suppliers to be on ground early before the real run on Nigeria starts”.
